Challenge Overview

This summer, we invite you and your kids to take part in the Science-U @Home Space Challenge! In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon, we want you and your kids to try some fun space-related activities and share with us a photo or a video of your exploration!

Every participant will be asked to agree to the terms and conditions of the contest. If a participant is submitting an entry online, the participant will need to click “I agree to the terms and conditions.” on the entry form. If a participant submits an entry through the mail, WPSU will send the terms and conditions to the participant and the participant will be required to sign the terms and conditions and return to WPSU. An entry will not be valid if the participant does not agree to the terms and conditions.

Terms & Conditions

  1. This competition is organized by WPSU Penn State.
  2. Eligibility:
    1. This contest is open to kids in grade K-8 who have permission of their parent(s) or guardian(s) to enter the contest.
    2. Must be a legal resident of the fifty (50) United States and D.C.
  3. Please abide by the following terms. WPSU does not allow:
    1. graphic, obscene, explicit or racial comments or submissions nor do we allow comments that are abusive, hateful, or intended to defame anyone or any organization.
    2. solicitations or advertisements. This includes promotion or endorsement of any financial, commercial or non-governmental agency. Similarly, we do not allow attempts to defame or defraud any financial, commercial or non-governmental agency.
    3. comments that suggest or encourage illegal activity.
  4. One submission per contestant.
  5. The first 100 entries will receive a WPSU rocket badge sticker. The entries will be entered to win a grand prize from WPSU, funded, in part by the EQT Foundation. Winners will be selected at random by WPSU.
  6. The challenge begins on Friday, June 14, at 12:00 a.m. and concludes on Wednesday, July 15, at 11:59 p.m. Entries beyond this point will not receive a prize.
  7. Winners will be announced on July 20, 2019 (National Moon Day).
  8. By entering the Science U Challenge by submission of a photograph and/or video, each entrant:
    • Represents and warrants that he/she is at least 18 years of age and is competent to contract in his/her name.
    • Represents and warrants that he/she is the owner of the photograph or video and all the intellectual property rights in the photograph and/or video.
    • Grants to The Pennsylvania State University (“Penn State”), its successors, assigns, sublicensees and partners (“Authorized Parties”) an irrevocable, perpetual, sublicensable, royalty-free, worldwide non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, distribute, exploit, adapt, modify, display and create derivative works of the photograph and/or video in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to: publications, websites, articles, brochures, books, magazines, newsletters exhibits, videos, films, social media, and advertisements (the “Materials”) for educational, promotional, or any other purposes Penn State deems appropriate. Authorized Parties may acknowledge the entrant as the photographer and/or videographer.
    • Grants the Authorized Parties the unrestricted right to use reproduce, distribute, exploit, adapt, modify, display and create derivative works of any and all statements made by the entrant in connection with the Challenge in any Materials at its sole discretion. Authorized Parties may acknowledge the entrant as the source of the statements.
    • Represents and warrants that he/she authorizes and consents or obtained for the Authorized Parties the authorization and consent of any individual depicted in the photograph and/or video to use their image, likeness, and statements in the Materials.
    • Waives any right to be notified or to inspect or approve the Materials.
    • Releases and hereby agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Authorized Parties for any and all claims that he/she or any third party may have now or in the future for invasion of privacy, right of publicity, copyright infringement, defamation, or any other cause of action arising from the use, exploitation, adaptation, modification, reproduction, distribution, or display of the photograph, video, or Materials.

Use of any photograph and/or video entry by any of the Authorized Parties does not indicate that the entrant will be selected as the winner or has won the Challenge.  Authorized Parties will not be required to pay any consideration or seek any approval in connection with such use.

What is the Science-U @Home Space Challenge?

How will you choose the winners of the grand prize?
Our panel of judges comprised of WPSU employees will choose winners at random.

Why should I participate in the Science-U @Home Space Challenge?
Because spending time with the kids is fun! Another motivation to participate in the challenge is that every entry will receive an exclusive WPSU rocket badge sticker and THREE out of those entries will win a grand prize!

When is the deadline to participate in the Science-U @Home Space Challenge?
The deadline to participate in the Science-U @Home Space Challenge is July 15, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be announced on July 20, 2019.
