Dr. Howard ZehrTake Note - Sunday, January 6, 2008
Guest: Dr. Howard Zehr
Title: Restorative Justice

Our current model of criminal justice emphasizes punishment and retribution, which helps explain why the United States has the highest incarceration rates in the world. But does our established system deliver justice-and for whom? We'll talk with one of the pioneers of the growing restorative justice movements about the promise and challenges of both systems.

A Life of Picasso

John Richardson continues to chronicle the life and artistry of Pablo Picasso in the third volume of the detailed biography "A Life of Picasso: The Triumphant Years 1917-1932." In this text, Richardson examines the painter's depictions of evil, and suggests that these works were a form of exorcism for the troubled artist.

"In Character" from NPR
The classic bad girl. The world's best dog. The angst-ridden teen in a world of phonies. The brilliant, murderous villain. The best fictional characters are interesting not only for who they are, but also for what they tell us about who we are. From January through June, NPR presents "In Character," an exploration of the origins and impact of iconic American characters from Atticus Finch to Tarzan.

Bugs Bunny
He's not the nicest of comedic archetypes -- the smart talking, crossdressing rabbit with a New York accent who's a bit of a bully. But Bugs comes out of a deep place in the human id, the same place with figures like Prometheus, Puck, Coyote, and Brer Rabbit come from, changing the rules and uprooting every established authority. Almost every folklore in the world has a similar figure, and while in Norse mythology it might be the god Loki, or the Monkey King in Chinese, in American culture the iconic trickster is Bugs.

Put to the Test
There's been a dramatic change in American public education over the past 10 years - and it's all about numbers. Schools across the country are using standardized tests to measure just about everything on student performance. And these tests can have stark consequences. School closures, student diplomas, teacher pay raises - all are increasingly linked to test results. This new American RadioWorks documentary examines how high-stakes testing took root in American classrooms and what effect it is having. We bring these questions to life through a portrait of Western Guilford High School in Greensboro, North Carolina over the course of two school years.

American RadioWorks on WPSU at 8pm.
